Dear Zindagi review: A beautiful frame, but... Alia Bhatt in 'Dear Zindagi'.

Acclaimed director Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi brings us Kaira - a fiery, career-focused girl of today's world. And we must add – she's hot too!

No boring spectacles here that needs to be removed by Mr Cool, who teaches her precious lessons on life. Alia Bhatt as Kaira sits comfortably on the chair of a cinematographer, ordering her way about and capturing those perfect frames. Her days in Mumbai revolve around her work and spunky set of friends, who add color to her life and bring laughter on to the screens.

The first frames give us a slice of her life in Mumbai, where we get to see the youth of today who work hard but party harder.

The mood is peppy, and Kaira is seen cozying up to a co-worker – a dashing Kunal Kapoor with a slightly new hairstyle. But mixing love and work is not the best of ideas. And poor Kaira learns it the hard way.

As Mumbai suddenly shows its misogynistic shades, an unmarried Kaira is forced to leave her artsy apartment and pack her bags to go home to Goa.

And there in those winding lanes, a bearded Shah Rukh Khan comes into the picture. SRK is Dr Jehangir Khan aka Jug, a therapist. Will this dimaang ka doctor solve the dil ka problems of Kaira?

Cinematographer Laxman Utekar has done a brilliant job with the camera, as he brings the sunshine of Goa to our dark theaters.

Music by Amit Trivedi goes in tune with the cheerful nature of the movie.

Director Gauri Shinde, who previously had us swooned with Sreedevi's comeback English Vinglish, brings us a beautiful frame but doesn't add the many shades of life that we are used to seeing in her films. The director, who also puts on the caps of screenplay and story writers, fumbled in effectively juggling all three roles. And the result: the plot fails to keep pace with the characters who keep you hooked.

Dear Zindagi review: A beautiful frame, but... Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt in the film.

It's nothing short of joy to watch SRK slipping effortlessly into Dr Jug's shoes and takes along the now sleep-deprived Kaira. After the avalanches led by the likes of Dilwale and Chennai Express, it was refreshing to see SRK mouth witty lines. His serene face and thoughtful eyes remind us why we hailed him as King Khan.

All the supporting cast from Kaira's friends, parents and kid brother gel well in the movie.

But Dear Zindagi belongs to Alia Bhatt, who is literally the 'Little Miss Sunshine' of the film as she glides through the sun-kissed frames in her breezy, colorful clothes. Her pretty face breaks into a myriad of emotions as she cries her heart out after a break-up and fumes with anger at her flabbergasted parents.

Like the tiny boats that break the waves, Dear Zindagi bobs along rhythmically, taking us along on its journey.

You are likely to come out of the theaters with a smile on your lips, but don't pause to think.
