This Kozhikode based little chef is a culinary maestro

Hayan Abdullah is chef extraordinaire! He’s neither from Lausanne in Switzerland nor the Taj in India. He’s not the little chef in Ratatouille either. He’s a just a six-year-old Chennai-based super kid gifted with culinary skills.

Hayan hails from Kozhikode, a foodie’s paradise, where all the dishes of the world converge. His father Shahnaz Abdullah is from Payyoli and mother Rasha, from Malappuram.

The tiny tot who used to spend a huge chunk of his time in the kitchen is now a “grown-up” who painstakingly explains his recipes to avid listeners and is quite a consultant with a visible presence on Facebook and YouTube.

“As a little baby he was always with me in the kitchen. He loved to splash about in water and that could be the reason why he began with dish washing. He enjoyed doing it. He next tried his hand at kneading dough for chappathy. He would mix it well and then make figures with the dough,” says his mother.

“He never enjoyed watching cartoons or such other stuff. He would be in the kitchen, keenly watching how I cooked. Within no time he had mastered the art. He would then take over and continue with what I’d been doing. He’s an expert now,” says mom Rasha.

Chocolate being his favorite, Hayan’s first try was a 'chocolate ball'. Tender coconut payasam, churakka payasam, chicken manthi, mango ice cream, fruit salad and Hyderabadi biriyani are some of the other goodies he can easily whip up.

'Kunafa' was the little chef’s hot favorite while he was in Dubai for the summer holidays. He brought back all the ingredients needed for kunafa and proved his skill and expertise by making it to perfection.

Rasha is all support for her son. She recently bought him his chef’s coat from an online site. Once the chef coat and cap were ready, he attired himself in them and the next demand was to be visible on YouTube. Rasha had to give in to his persistence. So she shot a few of his videos and uploaded them. Check him out on Hayan’s Delicacy. There he is! They were uploaded on YouTube about seven months ago. An animated Hayan can be seen giving instructions in English, Tamil and Malayalam. There are 34 videos with a platter-full of recipes. Delicacy, is Hayan’s domain on Facebook where Rasha has posted her son’s pictures, cookery tips and recipes.

The White Gold school in Perambur, Chennai, can be proud of its first grader wonder kid. Shahnaz Abdullah runs a series of biriyani outlets in Chennai. Quiz Hayan about his future plans: Given his culinary skills, will he be running the show for his father? “I cannot be just a chef. I want to be a footballer … not an ordinary player. I’ve got to be world renowned like my hero Messi,” says Hayan.

Hayan is good at studies too, say his parents. He takes his lessons with the same passion he has for food and football. Payasam is his weakness. One of his dreams is to open a big pasta bar and he’s given his parents a deadline to raise the dough for his ambitious venture.
