Incredible architecture in 5 cents in Nemom

Nemom house
The elevation features the flat-box style to utilize the spaces wisely in a congested plot.

Anwar Saleem’s house at Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is quite special as it proudly stands on the 5 cents plot that had posed quite a few challenges during the time of construction. A canal runs through the backside of the plot. So, a legal set-back of 3 metres had to be left here too. This was a major blow as the plot became smaller, leaving minimal options for the designer to incorporate designer features with essential amenities. The owner was worried whether there wouldn’t be enough space even to build a car porch. However, architect TG Arun deserves praise for designing such a fabulous house that looks splendid and has all the required amenities too.

The quaint space in the backside is designed as an enclosed area, close to the boundary wall. It has a glass ceiling too. Interestingly, this area has been turned into a backyard space where a car could be parked or parties could be hosted. The wash area too has been arranged here.

The elevation features the flat-box style to utilize the spaces wisely in a congested plot. The show wall decorated with wooden cladding is the highlight in the front side of the house. Meanwhile, GI truss roofing has been installed over the flat roof. The cement board panels that act as a façade is an interesting design element.

A sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, master bedroom, patio and a backyard have been arranged on the ground floor. Meanwhile, there are two more bedrooms and a foldable partition space on the upper floor. This area could be converted into a bedroom whenever there are guests. Interestingly, convertible furniture has been set up here to make it space-efficient.

The interiors are designed in an open style to make it look and feel vaster. The entrance door opens to the quaint living area. From here, one could enter the open hall where the dining area and the kitchen have been arranged. A mini courtyard too is arranged close to this. The staircase features stainless steel hand railings that add a classy vibe.

The custom-made furniture pieces do not make the spaces look congested. Meanwhile, the flooring done using vitrified tiles is elegant.

The kitchen boasts all the modern facilities while looking elegant. The cabinets are done in marine plywood with a laminate finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with nano white.

The backyard area is the highlight of the house. The Zen Garden with the Buddha figurine grants a soothing ambience to this area. Besides, party space and a barbecue spot too have been arranged here. As this is an enclosed and safe area, the doors could be opened to receive fresh air and natural light.

The family is relieved that they could build their dream home by effortlessly overcoming the spatial challenges posed by the 5 cents plot.
