Nestled in Parappanangadi, Malappuram, Kerala, this exquisite home belongs to Mohammed Faisal and his family. Their vision encountered a unique challenge — a 9-cent corner plot with an irregular and challenging shape. However, through effective and diligent design, they overcame this 'shapelessness,' crafting a space that perfectly accommodates their every need.

The plot was uniquely positioned with roads on two sides, prompting the use of a 'tilt' design to create a front-facing facade for the house. This innovative approach led to the creation of an inviting L-shaped verandah and balcony, perfect for family gatherings and leisurely moments.

Featuring a contemporary 'box' elevation, the 3735-sq ft house showcases unique perspectives from its two road-facing sides. The lower level accommodates a family living room, a formal living area, a sit-out, a dining room, a courtyard, a kitchen, a work area, and one bedroom. The first floor boasts four bedrooms and a balcony, while the inner corridors embrace a semi-open design theme.

Expatriate Mohammed Faizal envisioned a spacious lower level, ideal for reconnecting with friends and family during his vacation visits. This thematic choice is evident in the decision to place the bedrooms on the upper floor, maximising the open space on the ground level for gatherings and socialising.

Upon entering the house, a thoughtful design choice segregates the guest living area from the rest, ensuring privacy. The family living and dining seamlessly merge into the expansive open hall, adorned with a sleek TV unit. Adjacent to this area, a sliding glass door beckons, unveiling a tastefully designed side courtyard — a perfect retreat to savour an evening beverage or indulge in a good book. Keeping the sliding door ajar invites a refreshing infusion of natural light and fresh air, transforming the room into an inviting oasis.

The formal and family living areas find their division gracefully marked by the central staircase. All four bedrooms on the upper level enjoy a good view of the double-height courtyard, creating a harmonious connection between the two levels. This inviting courtyard, adorned with a swing and an abundance of indoor plants, basks in the glow of natural light, thanks to its glass ceiling.

The dining area boasts a sleek, 8-seater glass-top table accompanied by a wash area. The modern, modular kitchen offers abundant storage and is seamlessly integrated with the open concept, offering an unintended but convenient view of the television.

All four bedrooms feature balcony components accessible through glass sliding doors, each providing delightful views of the road—a beloved retreat for the family.

The house’s functional and aesthetic design cleverly masks the inherent ‘shapelessness’ of the original plot. It is a testament to ingenious design that the plot’s limitations were transformed into a dream space.
