Kottayam: Narendra Kumar, who was sentenced to death in the 2015 murder of a couple and their son at Parampuzha, near Kottayam, on Tuesday, came to Kerala two years ago with an ulterior plan to make some quick money as he had debts of over Rs 2 lakh back home.

The 26-year-old native of Ambedkar colony, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, reached Kottayam on a train on March 18, 2015, and went straight to a dry cleaning center in Prampuzha after seeing a job advertisement.

He introduced himself to Lalason, the center’s owner, as Jai Singh from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and produced a fake identity card. After joining duty, he won the confidence of the family and made them believe that he had a wife and daughter back home.

He worked there for about two months before hacking the three to death and making away with valuables on May 16, 2015.

Narendra Kumar, who belongs to the Jatva community, was living with his parents and elder brother in a slum on the outskirts of Firozabad.

A majority of the residents are members of organized gangs indulging in theft and robberies, said CI Saju Varghese, who headed the investigation team. The police there rarely take up such cases for investigation, he added.

Narendra Kumar, who maintained a distance with his family members, had been booked for a street brawl some years ago. The only person who was close to him was a friend of his brother-in-law. The police nabbed Kumar from Firozabad after tracking down this person.

As per police records, Narendra Kumar holds a bachelors’ degree in Economics. When he was in the Kottayam district Jail as a remand prisoner, he successfully completed the computer training program offered by Keltron with an A grade. A few days ago, the Keltron authorities had handed over his certificate to jail officials.

During the trial, his brother had visited him in the jail, it is learned. Narendra Kumar had been in the jail as a remand prisoner for over a year, but no one else came to visit him during the period, the police added.
