Mavelikkara: Two RSS workers have been arrested in connection with the discovery of explosives and weapons at an unoccupied house as well as the hurling of firecrackers at the houses of a panchayat president and a CPM branch secretary. The police made headway in the probe after getting hold of shreds of magazine pages recovered from the blast sites. Investigations at firecracker-making units at Mavelikkara, Cheppad and Muttam finally led to the duo.

The arrested people are T V Sivaprasad, alias Bomb Kannan, (28) of Kayamkulam and Amal S Kumar (29) of Chettikulangara. The police recovered six swords, an S-shaped knife and two other daggers from their bike.

Thekkethil Saji (40) of Chettikulangara who had purchased the fire crackers for them had earlier been nabbed.

According to police, Sivaprasad and Amal had hurled firecrackers at the house of panchayat president C Krishnamma on November 26. They had targeted the house of Kallittakadavil Vineesh Raj on December 17 in the same manner. Raj is the president of DYFI's Chettikulangara North unit and the secretary of CPM's Kadavur branch.

Sivaprasad was an expert in making weapons at home, said the police. Several swords and daggers were seized from a workshop of his. A case has been registered by Kareelakulangara police in this regard, said the DySP.

Picking up the clues

Taking clues from the magazine shreds police reached the firecracker-making units. A magazine at a Muttam unit had missing pages which were found to be the torn ones found at the crime spots. The factory owner told the police two men had purchased some crackers ostensibly for a festival at Kattuvallil temple on November 23. Later, one among the two men had reached the unit again two days later and bought more crackers.
