Kerala reports 49 fresh cases of Omicron, tally reaches 230

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala on Wednesday recorded 49 fresh cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus, taking the total number of infections to 230.

Of the 49 patients, seven came from high-risk countries while 32 reached the state from low-risk countries, the health department said. Ten people contracted the new variant through their contacts.

Most number of Omicron-infected people came from UAE, Qatar and the UK. Other infected are returnees from countries like Ukraine, Canada, Ghana, Spain and the US.

"Till now, a total of 141 people have reached the state from low-risk countries while 59 have reached from high-risk countries. Thirty people have contracted the disease through their contacts," the release said.

Ten cases were detected in Thrissur district. The rest are in Kollam (8), Ernakulam (7), Malappuram (6), Alappuzha (3), Palakkad (3), Kozhikode (2), Kasaragod(2), Thiruvananthapuram (1), Pathanamthitta (1), Kottayam (1), Idukki (1), Kannur (1) and Wayanad (1). Two Tamil Nadu natives have also contracted the virus. One of them returned from the UK and the other from Qatar.

Fresh COVID-19 cases in Kerala saw a further rise on Wednesday with the state reporting 4,801 new infections which raised the caseload to 52,54,290.

There are currently 1,04,353 people under surveillance in various districts, of whom 1,02,007 are in home or institutional quarantine and 2,356 in hospitals.
