Thiruvananthapuram: The body of a migrant worker who was trapped inside a 90-feet-deep well at Vizhinjam was taken out on Monday morning.

Rescuers found Maharajan's body after efforts that lasted around 50 hours. The rescue operation was carried out by National Disaster Response Force, Fire Force and Police.

A team of  men who have expertise in well construction spotted the body of the migrant worker inside the well.

Maharajan who hails from Tamil Nadu met with the accident on Saturday when he was fixing rings inside the well at Mukkola near Vizhinjam, police said.

He was trapped inside the well when the soil fell on him as the well caved in.

Fire and rescue services officials and the police said the efforts continued throughout Saturday night to bring out the man.

The information regarding the incident was received around 9.30 am on Saturday.

Vizhinjam police, fire services personnel and local residents were engaged in removing the soil from the almost 90-feet-deep well in an effort to bring him out. The rescue mission was called off on Sunday after water flow to the well increased.

A 25-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Alappuzha and expert well workers from Kollam's Puyapally, who carry out such rescue operations, also participated in the mission.

Though a metal ring was lowered into the well to prevent mudslide and torrents, the rescue team had to retract from the well when another mudslide occurred. An expert trained in disaster management operations and a task force of the fire brigade had also inspected the well from inside.

Though they discovered that Maharajan was a few feet away from them, they could not continue the mission due to the possibility of a landslip.

The rope connected to the pump at the bottom of the well was found by evening. With the hope of pulling Maharajan out using the rope, hundreds of men were deployed to remove the underground pump using a chain pulley. But this was to no avail.

The NDRF team was summoned following this.
