Kannur: The Thalassery Additional Sessions Court (3) on Tuesday sentenced nine BJP-RSS workers to life imprisonment for the murder of DYFI worker Rijith Shankaran (25) in 2005.

The convicted are V V Sudhakaran (56), Jayesh (39), C P Ranjith (42), P P Ajindran (50), I V Anilkumar (51), P P Rajesh, V V Sreekanth (46), his brother V V Sreejith (42), and T V Bhaskaran (66). The third accused, Ajesh, passed away before the trial concluded.

According to the case, the convicts attacked Rijith and his companions—Nikesh, Vimal, and Vikas—with swords and knives on October 10, 2005, near a temple in Thachankandi, due to political rivalry. While all sustained injuries, Rijith succumbed to his wounds before reaching the hospital.
