Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that a Doppler radar will be set up in Kochi within three months. Kochi will have a china-made S-band radar. Dr. M. Rajeevan, secretary of IMD, said that a C-band radar set up at Thiruvananthapuram by ISRO has already started functioning.
Dr. Rajeevan added that the signals from the new radar will help predicting cyclones, heavy rainfalls and floods emerging in the Arabian Sea, that are likely to hit the state’s western shores.
The radar will forecast weather condition in 200 km radius. The radar is expected to cost around 12-15 crores.
During the ‘Palathulli’ award ceremony held in Kochi last month, Manorama had recommended to Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister of Science and Technology, for the setting up of Doppler radars in Kerala.
It is also decided to set up a Doplar radar in Mangaluru within a year. This would facilitate weather prediction in northern districts of Kerala. Consequently, weather prediction will be in full swing all over Kerala in a year, Dr. Rajeevan said.
