Thiruvananthapuram: The zoo authorities were Monday left red-faced as they found out that a female anaconda, whose delivery was being awaited, had not conceived at all.

While earlier reports had stated that the reptile, named Angela, would deliver this month after completing seven months of pregnancy, it turned out to be a case of "pseudo pregnancy" as per preliminary examination conducted by the authorities here.

There are seven anacondas in the zoo, including six females, and all of them were brought from Sri Lanka.

The pregnancy was suspected after the reptile started gaining weight following a mating session, the zoo authorities said.

There was a 10-kg weight gain in the last seven months and the reptile weighed 65 kg now, prompting the authorities to suspect it was pregnant.

However, after an ultra sound scan, it was found to be not pregnant, zoo officials said.
