Malappuram: In another incident of ragging in Kerala, 21 MBBS students of the Government Medical College, Manjeri, have been placed under suspension pending an inquiry by the college authorities after they were accused of ragging juniors.
The action was taken on a joint complaint filed by 42 first year MBBS students.
The freshers complained to principal M. Mohanan that the seniors forced them to strip and clean toilets at the men’s hostel attached to the hospital. They were also made to drink unhygienic water from the tap inside the toilet, the victims alleged.
A committee comprising three professors has been constituted to inquire into the incident, the principal said.
“The anti-ragging cell will also conduct a probe. Further action could be taken against the accused if the allegations in the complaint are found to be true,” he added.
Notably, if there are repeated cases of ragging from a college, its affiliation could be canceled by the Medical Council of India. Hefty fines could also be slapped on institutions that fail to initiate stringent actions to curb the menace.
A similar incident took place in Nattakom, where nine first year students were brutally ragged for hours in the Government Polytechnic college hostel on December 2. Two students suffered serious injuries in this incident.
