Schoolgirl calls out 'Oommen Chandy', CM grants her wish

Kozhikode: Sivani and friends had a problem at hand. And they had heard that the Chief Minister was a problem solver. So the moment Sivani got him within earshot, she yelled, "Oommen Chandy…"

Chandy was amused by the second-standard student waving to him and calling out his name. He was touched when he learned that the children had called him to air a grievance: Their classmate Amal Krishna was homeless. Both his parents were ill.

The Chief Minister left the venue only after allotting Rs 3 lakh to build a house for the child.

Chandy was walking up the stage to inaugurate the new building for the Government Teachers’ Training Institute at Nadakkavu when he heard the children call him by his name. Sivani and her classmates at the Government Model Lower Primary School had come prepared to help out their friend Amal Krishna, who lived in a rented room at Kundooparambu with father Sudheesh and mother Anisha.

“Amal Krishna is homeless,” Sivani said. “His father is not well,” pitched in Abhay Sankar and Jagan. “Mother too,” completed Vishnunath.

Chandy turned to principal T.C. Rose Mary and asked if she knew about Amal Krishna. She nodded and said the kids were right. The Chief Minister wanted the principal to give it in writing and ordered the release of Rs 3 lakh for building a house for the child.

He felicitated the children at the function. Then they had an additional request. Please make our school into a high school.

The people in the area had already formed a committee to help build a house for Amal Krishna’s family. The committee has opened a bank account at SBI’s Nadakkavu branch. Current account number 35383961128; IFS Code SBIN0002260.
