Thiruvananthapuram: Rail traffic via Alappuzha will be disrupted because of signal-upgradation works at Ernakulam Junction. Trains would be cancelled, rescheduled or rerouted till February 10 because of the upgrade.
Most passenger trains would offer only partial services while some would be cancelled altogether. Long distance trains would be diverted through Kottayam and would skip Ernakulam Junction. Such trains would halt at Ernakulam North, Kottayam and Chengannur. Netravathi Express would also stop at Tiruvalla and Changanassery.
Trains coming from Thrissur would stop at Aluva, Edapally and Ernakulam North. Once work starts, only two tracks would be open for services at Ernakulam Junction. The Ernakulam City MEMU services would be completely stopped while work is going on.
The proposed upgrades are expected to enhance safety and efficiency. Wooden crossover panels would be replaced with concrete panels and a new microprocessor-controlled system is to be incorporated, adding to safety. Already rail doubling is also going on, which has delayed trains by hours.
