The pachyderm was found with a bullet injury in the head, in a kneeling posture. According to forest officials, the elephant, which was grazing by the roadside could have been shot dead by any passer-by.
The circumstances, which forced the firing, are not yet clear. An autopsy will be conducted under the supervision of a special team, wildlife warden, P. Dhanesh Kumar said.
