The 5.6-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's most populous province of West Java, causing significant damage to the town of Cianjur and burying at least one village under a landslide.
West Java governor Ridwan Kamil said on Instagram that 162 people had been killed and 326 were injured.
The tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas of Ghaziabad and Gurugram and even in Lucknow.
The quake was also felt in the provinces of Yunnan, Shaanxi and Guizhou hundreds of kilometres away, according to state media.
The quake with its epicentre in Martinbirta hit Khotang, 450 km east of Kathmandu, at 8:13 am.
The quake injured around 60 people, damaged buildings and sent strong tremors through the capital, Manila.
The tremors in Kodagu district and adjoining districts of Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada besides Vijayapura and neighbouring regions in north Karnataka have been felt since June 26.
According to sources, a loud noise was heard and minor tremors were felt around 7.45 am at Panathady village located in Hosdurg taluk of Kasaragod district in Kerala.
The European seismological agency, EMSC, said the earthquake's tremors were felt over 500 km (310 miles) by 119 million people across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
No report of loss of life or damage to property has been received in either of the quake, officials said.
