Atletico Madrid pipped city rivals Real Madrid to the title after Luis Suarez fired them to a 2-1 comeback win at Real Valladolid.
Atletico Madrid took a giant step towards the La Liga title in dramatic circumstances by fighting their way back to beat Osasuna 2-1 at home thanks to a late strike from Luis Suarez.
Real moved into second place on 78 points, two behind leaders Atletico Madrid with two games left to play. Barcelona are third, two points adrift of Real.
Barcelona moved up to second place with 75 points.
The result was a body blow for Barca, who had lost just once in their previous 22 league games and no longer have the destiny of the title in their own hands.
Atletico lead the table on 73 points but third-placed Barca, on 71 after beating Villarreal 2-1 earlier on Sunday, can take over first place if they beat Granada on Thursday in their game in hand.
The win took Barca back up to third place on 68 points, five behind leaders Atletico Madrid but with a game in hand.
Spain's Atletico Madrid, Italy's Inter Milan, and six English teams abandoned the breakaway competition after intense criticism.
Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all very much in contention with only eight games each left.
Diego Simeone's side got off to an ideal start when Yannick Carrasco dribbled into an empty net in the fifth minute thanks to a lucky bounce but Betis levelled with a thumping volley from Cristian Tello in the 20th.
