The UV Index is grouped into five categories, each with a color code. Values 0-2 are classified as Low (green); 3-5 as Moderate (yellow); 6-7 as High (orange); 8-10 as Very High (red); and 11+ as Extreme (violet).
Prolonged exposure to high UV radiation can cause sunburn, skin diseases, eye problems, and other health issues, the SDMA warned.
Orange alerts have been issued in Kollam, Kottayam.
Kerala is probably the only state in the country that now relies on an established system to issue alerts on UV levels.
A yellow alert has been sounded in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts.
According to the KSDMA report issued on March 14, a high UV level of 11 was recorded in the past 24 hours in at least three districts.
The highest UV index is recorded between 10 am and 3 pm in the district.
KSDMA has advised people to take precautions to avoid UV-related health issues such as sunburn, heatstroke, and skin damage.
Rising UV radiation levels, coupled with intense heat and humidity, have become a growing concern in Kerala.
The SDMA issued a warning on Monday after UV radiation levels reached an index of 9 in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts.
