What perhaps concerns the Kerala govt is the slow, but steady rise in water levels of various dams in the central and north Kerala districts. It had forced authorities to raise the shutters of several dams on Friday.
The IMD has issued an Orange alert indicating isolated heavy rainfall for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala.
Three shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam were opened by 30 cm earlier in the day to release 534 cubic feet of water. This was later doubled to well over 1,000 cubic feet to release excess water.
The heavy downpour in Kerala resulted in water levels of various rivers -- like Chalakkudy, Pampa, Manimala and Achankovil -- in various districts rising close to or crossing danger levels.
The water level in 10 of KSEB's bigger dams, including the largest Idukki dam, has not crossed even the 'blue level', the first stage when a warning is issued.
The crater is wide enough to suck in medium-size vehicles.
Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki district collectors have declared holiday for educational institutions on Thursday.
The IMD has issued a 'red alert' in 10 districts for August 3.
It is advised to avoid travel to hilly areas or beach destinations until the rains subside.
Four teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Thrissur districts.
