he High Court has instructed the secretary of the higher education department to issue an order allowing other universities to conduct courses on the distance education mode if the University Grants Commission doesn’t give approval to the Sree Narayana Guru Open University. Justice Devan Ramachandran said that the order must be issued before 26 August.
The Ministry of Education by next year will unify institutional accreditation which is currently being done by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
The move comes after the commission noticed that the university had allegedly violated the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, in running its distance education programmes.
The decision comes in the wake of the changes in the guidelines of the National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF).
The emphasis will be on enhancing employability for these two years. As there are multiple-entry-exit options, this internship would be sufficient for students who discontinue their studies after three years.
The professors claimed that a full-time degree programme needs full-time attention and efforts while others noted that the flexibility will also be offered by the Four Year Undergraduate Programme to a larger extent.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will soon issue detailed guidelines in this regard and the option will be available to students from the 2022-23 academic session.
According to norms, no higher educational institution can offer any open and distance learning programmes and admit learners unless they are granted recognition by the Commission.
