Rahul Narvekar of the BJP was on Sunday elected Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly during the first day of its special session.
The BJP leader has established his credentials as an astute politician, who has hold over the party and state machinery. He led BJP to major wins in the recent RS and Legislative Council elections.
Fadnavis is expected to make a comeback as chief minister after holding the post from 2014 to 2019.
The BJP's move came after a group of 39 Shiv Sena MLAs along with 11 other legislators sent an email to the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
