Kochi: Suresh Eriyat, the maker of Fisherwoman and tuk tuk, which won the national award for the best animation film is all proud of his achievement, which he said he had been expecting. Hailing from Thripunithura, Suresh hopes the honour will draw more people to the field of animation. Suresh feels despite working for animation films produced elsewhere in the world, Indians are far behind in making animation movies.
Before the national award came its way, Fisherwoman and tuk tuk had won over 10 honours from several international film festivals, including the Tokyo Anima award for best film.
A fisherwoman and an autorickshaw are the main characters in the film. The story revolves around the woman buying an autorickshaw with all her savings and the ensuing events.
Suresh landed in Mumbai in 1998 after attending the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. After working at a studio called Famous for a brief stint, he started Eeksauras, his own firm which focused on ad film making initially.
In 2015, his movie Fateline won the Annecy Crystal prize at Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which is often dubbed as the Oscars of animation movies. Suresh is the first one from India to win the same.
Suresh frequents Kerala to conduct classes for animation students. He is settled in Mumbai with his wiife Neelima and daughter Ananya. He is the son of P.N. Kesava Panikkar and Kamalavathy of Eriyat family.
