Durga and Shobhana in the movieThe Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu is always remembered not just for its array of actors and their stellar performances, but also for its epic dialogues.
While Sobhana won the National Award and Kerala State Film Award for the best actress for her performance as 'Ganga' and her alter ego 'Nagavalli' in the movie, it was one of the popular dialogues that accelerated the popularity of the movie.
"Vidamaate? Vidamaate? Apo ne enne ingerundu engeyum poga vidamaate? Ayogya naaye, unakku evalavu dairyam iriunda, ipovum en kanmunnadi vannu nippe! Innikku durgashtami, unna naan konnu un rathatha kudichu omkara nadanamaduven" shook the Malaylis to wake up to Nagavalli's reality in the movie.
It was after 23 years that director Fazil has revealed that this ferocious sound belongs to Tamil dubbing artist Durga.
“Initially, Bhagyalakshmi had dubbed for Sobhana's characters Ganga and Nagavalli. But later, when we found that both the characters, so different from one another, had too similar a voice, we decided to give Nagavelli's part to Tamil dubbing artist Durga. However, we forgot to inform this to Bhagylakshmi then and for years she believed she had given the voice-over for the hit dialogue," said Fazil.
In an exclusive interview with Manorama News, Durga expressing her happiness upon getting recognition for her work after 23 years. "I was very disappointed about it all these years and now I feel so happy," she said.
