'Ki & Ka': Alpha, beta, go! A still from the movie

Ki & Ka had already made a splash with its alpha male-bashing theme through its trailer. To be fair, it takes a whole lot of fun right out of the film to get at three quarters of the story, with the visuals, so much so that you know there’s an impending slap somewhere after the couple happily get married holding tight their ideals, a mother-in-law who’s going to query her future son-in-law about the couple’s sex life, and that somewhere the whirring vehicle diverts to rocky road, for there’s the lead actress brooding, faraway look all included.

So, for those who missed the trailer that speaks volumes, Ki is Kia (Kareena Kapoor), ambitious, hard working and aiming to succeed in what she does (just like a lot of others). Ka is Kabir (Arjun Kapoor), who takes hold of the gender norms by their collar, whirling them around to a 90 degree (no, not quite a full circle), making for what becomes an interesting theme to be discussed and talked about.

While the idea that he wants to be 'like his ma' instead of his father is the whirling we’re talking about, the intent becomes slightly questionable, as his mother’s life was the example of one that got tousled in the mad run for money that his business tycoon father (Rajit Kapoor) was busy executing.

'Ki & Ka': Alpha, beta, go! Ka is Kabir played by Arjun Kapoor

Let’s say he was trying to prove otherwise—a life unnoticed is still significant—and, in the bargain garners a lot of publicity for doing what he does. Why? Because he’s a man playing the oddball. It’s ironic that Ka finds it rather simple, and says to a media person that it’s ‘not breaking news’, well, not to play spoilsport, but a whole movie got made on the theme.

So in a while, an alarmingly mature wedded life where the role reversal is in effect finds its balance tilted. Kareena, who was in the limelight, is being slightly pushed to the margins, and the new and different 'animal', as she likes to term her house-husband, becomes an unintentional hit with magazine front covers (Balki makes it look so easy for someone to be the cover girl/boy).

'Ki & Ka': Alpha, beta, go! A propensity for the dramatic keeps hindering an otherwise plucky story

While the concept of crafting a story around gender norms and their performances fall in context with the upper class, educated folks, it’s largely restricted. Despite that, the idea works well; however, the sloppy romantic interludes and a desperate cry for funny moments keep the film from getting on to a smoother phase. A propensity for the dramatic keeps hindering an otherwise plucky story that could have whetted its strong points.

While the actors did have a sunny day out, fragmented pieces that kept on falling out of the main story makes it difficult even for them to pull the whole act together.

Ki & Ka movie review

Scrunching it up

» Arjun Kapoor crying in the plane: Was it a counter to the #Vogueempower advertisement ‘ladke rote nahi hai’? No qualms with crying, just a tad awkwardly executed.

» Kareena’s mother’s reaction to their wedding news: Why make Swaroop Sampath the wannabe crème de la crème mother there, at that one point?

» Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan: Nicely placed, and the duo crack it. They looked endearing, and very much in their element.

» Airplane sequence at the end: Rolling eyes, stifling an ‘Oh no, why this now’.

Ki and Ka movie review

» While the concept and the attempt linger, style of narration and a good screenplay are the factors that are going to take the bashing.

» With an angle that only benefits from more of an upper class, progressive view on the subject, Ki & Ka is definitely a start when it comes to reaching out to regular audiences; it’s good enough to turn a few heads, for now.
