No end to horror: another dalit girl gang-raped in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Days after a law student was brutally raped and murdered in Perumbavoor, another young student was reportedly gang-raped and left abandoned in Varkala.

Reports said that the police have nabbed three suspects, including the boyfriend, in the case. The girl has identified the detained persons, sources added.

The victim, a second year BSC nursing student, was raped by her boyfriend, an auto-rickshaw driver, and two of his friends near Ayanthi bridge in Varkala on Tuesday.

As per reports, the girl was on her way back home after visiting Kollam with her boyfriend, when she was subjected to the cruelty.

Two of his friends also got into the vehicle later. They took the auto-rickshaw to a deserted spot and allegedly raped her, police said.

The teenager, who was found distraught inside an auto-rickshaw near the railway station, was admitted to the hospital by locals and police personnel. 

The girl was in a state of shock and suffered from fits when she was found by some people who rushed to the vehicle on hearing her cries for help, they said.

A team of expert doctors is monitoring the condition of the girl, who was admitted to the ICU of the SAT hospital at the Thiruvanathapuram Government Medical College here late night, from a private hospital in Varkala.

Hospital sources said her condition is stable.

"Doctors are frequently monitoring her health condition, which is stable now. Visitors are strictly prohibited," SAT hospital superintendent said here in a release.

A case under IPC 376 (2) (g) (gang-rape) was registered against the accused, police said. The girl's statement was recorded before a magistrate on Wednesday.

"Based on the statement of the girl, we registered a case against three persons. A medical examination has confirmed that she was gang-raped," Varkala circle inspector Vinod B. said.

Meanwhile, CPM workers blocked the road demanding urgent action against the culprits.

The incident comes days after a 30-year-old dalit law student was raped and murdered in Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district.
