When cops double up as farmers
The cops at the Kurathikkad police station grow vegetables organically on the station premises for supplying it to their mess.

Charummoodu: Organic farming has caught up and more and more people are resorting to sustainable, green practices in agriculture. Also, it is not often law enforcers take up farming, though we have heard about police personnel making a mark displaying artistic talents.

The cops at the Kurathikkad police station here in Alappuzha district grow vegetables organically on the station premises for supplying it to their mess. Brinjal, tomato, green chillies and spinach are among the vegetables growing abundantly at the station along with banana.

Watering of the plants is done by the cops every morning. After the work at the station, police officers led by SHO A C Vipin engage in farming activities. The officers had collected high quality seeds for their vegetable garden and also sought expert advice to make the venture a success.

As there are no hotels nearby, the food for the officers is prepared at the station mess. With the police personnel tasting the fruits of their own labour, the meals at the station have become more sumptuous.

Having learnt the tricks of the trade, the officers are now planning to bring more areas around the station under cultivation.
