Kottayam: More problems have surfaced on the newly built Nagampadam rail overbridge in Kottayam town, posing a threat to the safety of the travellers.

Parts of the concrete on the road have begun to peel off, while the approach roads on either side of the bridge have sunk by a few centimetres. Cracks were also found on the wall of the bridge. Though the travellers on this route have directly complained to the railway authorities about the height difference between the approach roads and the bridge, no action has been taken to rectify it.

The fault with the approach road is especially dangerous to the riders of two-wheelers.

The railways is entirely responsible for the construction and maintenance of the bridge and the approach roads. Though the railways’ engineering wing has conceded that the problem with the approach road was brought to its attention, no corrective measure has been taken.

The authorities said that it was natural for the area to sink a little when heavy vehicles move over the part where the approach road joins with the bridge. However, in the case of the Nagampadam bridge, this is more than the usual occurrence. The concrete began to peel off after the recent heavy rain. However, no probe was held into this.

The rail authorities said that the crack on the wall was not dangerous. They further said that they were not able to find any technical faults on the bridge. Also, that the approach road did not have any flaws.
