Alappuzha: The body of a 25-year-old man from Tamil Nadu, who accidentally fell into the swollen Punnamada lake and went missing last night, was recovered this morning.

According to police, the body of Deepak from Periyanaikkan Palayam in Coimbatore, was found stuck underneath the houseboat on board he had been staying. The body was shifted to Alappuzha Medical College for autopsy and will be handed over to relatives soon.

Deepak had arrived along with a nine-member group, which was on a visit to the backwaters of Alappuzha a few days ago. They boarded the houseboat on Sunday afternoon. The ride was completed in the evening and the boat was stationed at the house board yard near Pallathuruthy. However, the family continued be on board to spend the night.

Preliminary investigations suggest Deepak, who was spending the night at the lower deck of the boat, accidentally fell into the lake, which has been on a spate following heavy rains. Other members of the family, who were on the upper deck, did not notice the incident.

As soon as they realised Deepak was missing, the family raised an alarm and the fire and rescue personnel carried out a search in the lake and its premises, though to no avail. Following this, a team of diving experts was called in this morning, who found the body.

Deepak, who owned a business in Coimbatore, came to Alappuzha along with his sister Deepika. Of the remaining members in the group, five are from Coimbatore while two each are from Erode and Tirupur.

Deepika, meanwhile, has been admitted to a hospital here after developing uneasiness in the morning.
