Kalpetta: The second largest flower in the world Amorphophallus Titanum has bloomed for the first time in India at Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary and Garden in Peria near here.

The holder of world's largest worst smelling flower tag, titan arum is attracting hordes of people and flies to Gurukula garden. The flower, unlike the plant which has a life span of 40 years, lives only for a day or two.

The greenskeepers at Gurukula garden had to wait for eight years to see the plant bloom; the plant is expected to have a few more blooms.

At first glance, one could easily mistake titan arum as a overgrown elephant yam flower (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius).

The spadix and the stalk bearing the flower is 20ft high with a leaf-like curved bract, which is about 4 meters high.

The flower, which is also known the corpse flower, was brought to Wayanad from its native place - the rain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia.
