Kannur: As controversy rages over a dalit woman attempting suicide after she was arrested for assaulting a CPM leader, Kerala police have registered case against Thalassery MLA A.N. Shamseer and DYFI leader P.P. Divya.

Case was registered against the Left leaders on Tuesday for instigating/abetting 25-year-old Anjana to commit suicide.

Anjana had earlier given statements against the leaders. Police have also filed a case against Anjana for attempting suicide.

The Kerala police and the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government had drawn flak after two Dalit sisters - Akhila (30) and Anjana (25) – along with Akhila's baby were arrested on a complaint by CPM that the sisters had barged into their party office here and attacked one of their activists.

The duo - daughters of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) leader N. Rajan - were released on bail on Saturday.

Anjana, who had participated in a television debate on Saturday, came home and allegedly consumed some tablets.

Her family said that during the TV debate, woman DYFI leader Divya insulted the sisters by saying that the duo were part of a 'criminal goonda gang'.

'Women's family humiliated'

Meanwhile, National Commission For Scheduled Castes recorded Anjana's statement on the issue.

Director of the panel Girija P., after recording Anjana's statement, said that the women's family was humiliated. The national commission also met Anjana's relatives.

The state SC/ST Commission also took Anjana's statement. Its chief P.N.Vijayakumar took the statement from Anjana, who is recuperating in the hospital. The commission also took the statement from the women members of the family.

Kannur collector P. Bala Kiran also visited Anjana at the hospital.

Opposition trains guns at Pinarayi

Opposition continued to slam chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan for refusing to comment over the issue.

"The CM should not act as part secretary," opposition leader Ramesh Chenntiahla said.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Oommen Chandy said that it was for the first time in Kerala that two dalit women along with a child were jailed in a 'forged case'.
