Kottayam: Five students of the Government Polytechnic, Nattakom, accused of ragging their juniors, surrendered before police Monday, after being on the run for over 10 days.
Two of their victims, who were stripped naked, made to do exercises for hours and force-fed alcohol, are now in hospital. One of them has suffered damage to a kidney.
Second-year students Jerin, Sharan, Jaison, Jayaprakash, and third-year student Manu (no second names available) – all SFI activists – surrendered before the Changanassery circle inspector. They were accompanied by their parents. Police will now record their statements.
Cops had earlier raided their houses and asked the parents to produce them in court.
Three more students are wanted in the case, and cops said a search is on for them.
The victims, all first-year students of the college, were brutally ragged for hours in the college hostel on December 2.
Investigators have recorded the statement of Shaiju T. Gopi, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ernakulam, and collected the medical details of Avinash, whose kidney was damaged.
Meanwhile, KSU and Youth Congress workers took out a march to the police station, demanding the arrest of the SFI activists accused of ragging.
Chandy visits ragging victim
Former chief minister Oommen Chandy visited Avinash at the hospital Sunday and demanded that the government compensate the ragging victim and take care of his medical expenses. Chandy, who spent about 30 minutes with Avinash and his parents, also asked the district Congress committee to meet the student’s medical expenses.
