Police register case against seven students for ragging

Kottayam: The Chingavanam police have registered a case against senior students involved in ragging of a first year student of Government Polytechnic Nattakam.

The 17-year old first year Mechanical diploma student who hailed from Ernakulam was stripped and forced to do 50 push-ups in his hostel room by second and third year students of the same college.

The first year student suffered serious injuries and Chingavanam police on behest of complaint from College authorities have filed case under Prevention of Ragging act against third year students Abilash, Manu and second year students Nithin, Praveen, Sharan, Jerin and Jayaprakash. The college authorities informed that the accused students have been suspended.

The incident took place in a hostel room on December 2. The victim told police that senior students came to his hostel room at around midnight and took him to another room. In that room, he found more than one fellow first year students. The first year students were stripped and forced to do 50 push-ups by the senior students.

The victim collapsed a few times while taking the push-ups but the senior students didn’t end the ragging. After completing the push-ups, they forced him to do 100 sit-ups. The first year student told police that he was later taken to the bathroom and forced to stand in shower for half-an-hour.

The victim, who felt pain throughout his body, returned home and sought treatment at Ernakulam General Hospital. It was found that the victim had suffered severe internal injuries and he later sought treatment from a private hospital.

The Cheraallur police first registered the case based on the student’s deposition. The case was later handed over to Chingavanam Police. SI M.S. Shibu registered case against senior students after receiving complaints from the college authorities and the victim.
