Ertiga face-lift focuses on styling and mileage Photo: Maruti website

The Maruti Ertiga became the undisputed leader of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment instantly after it hit the market a few years ago. Till recently, it was the only seven-seater available in the domestic market, which offered ample space and flexibility apart from interior comfort and high fuel efficiency at a relatively low cost.

However, the scene has changed over the last couple of years with new entrants Honda Amaze and Renault Lodgy posing a formidable challenge to it its supremacy.

Taking into account the changing needs and demands of the market, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has recently launched an updated version of the multi-purpose van with several new features.

Here is the test-drive impressions and specifications of the new Ertiga:

A brief history

Maruti Ertiga was first showcased in its concept version at the 2010 Auto Expo. The seven-seater MPV, which was called the Concept R3, grabbed eyeballs at the event. When it was finally launched in 2012 with a new name, the vehicle could capture the imagination of buyers looking for versatility and space.

The sliding door in the concept version made way for regular hinged doors while the redesigned headlamps and the bumper enhanced the overall appeal of the vehicle as compared to R3.

When the model was given a face-lift after four years, the manufacturers could progressively improve the vehicle’s efficiency and the aesthetic values.

Impressive exterior

The exterior changes include a new chrome front grille and an updated headlamp and front bumper that give a fresh look to the vehicle. Apart from the improved styling, emphasis is put on aerodynamics to increase its fuel economy. Sporty alloy wheels, electric folding wing mirror, new pin bumper, and the chromium garnish above the pin number plate give the new Ertiga an elegant look.

Premier facilities

The vehicle comes with a 3-row layout with two front-row bucket seats and three seats in the middle row. The middle row can be pushed forward to accommodate two passengers in the last row. There is adequate legroom in both the rear rows. Moreover, the second row seats are adjustable for reach. From outside, the last row seats may appear to be suited for kids, but tall adults can sit comfortably on them. All three rows have air-conditioning vents and cup holders.

Interior comfort

Unlike some of the vehicles in the given segment which come with bench-type seats, Ertiga’s second and third-row seats are designed to provide maximum comfort to the passengers to lean back with their legs stretched out. The new model features armrest in the seats in the second row as well. The air-conditioning vents will definitely make the ride more enjoyable for the rear-seat occupants.  One of the drawbacks is that there will not be much space left for luggage if the seats in the third row is occupied. However, if you fold the two rear seats, there will be plenty of boot space as in estate cars. Moreover, the second and third-row seats can be arranged as per your need.

Luxurious features

After the face-lift, Ertiga sports a more luxurious and aesthetically pleasing look. The interior is covered with beige colour. The dash top has a beige finish with a richer shade. The instrument cluster and steering, however, remain unchanged. High-end features such as the push-button start, steering mounted controls, new metre console, additional battery charger, touch screen stereo and the navigation system could help the new Ertiga to overcome the shortcomings of its predecessor. There are variants of the model equipped with safety features like ABS & airbags.   Revamped engine

The new diesel model featuring the hybrid technology delivers 24.52 km/l, which is about 4km/l more fuel mileage as compared to the old model. Apart from fuel efficiency, the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel motor ensures a power-packed performance as well. Those who have heard of the Fiat multi-jet engine know that it is a real monster.

The K-14 VVT 1.4 litre petrol engine promises a mileage of around 18 km/l. The interior comfort offered by Ertiga is second to none in the segment, though the petrol variant is more comfortable to drive. However, with increasing petrol prices, it is obvious that many would be opting for the diesel version.

Rate: The ex-showroom petrol base variant starts at Rs 6.58 lakh and the diesel variant at Rs 8.04 lakh.
