JoSAA first-round allotment: Online reporting until July 4

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSSA) has published the seat-allocation list for the first round of online seat allocation for admission to top engineering institutes in the country for the 2023–24 academic year. The online reporting, fee payment and uploading the documents should be completed before 5 pm on July 4.

The candidates could check the details by clicking on the ‘Activity Board’ link on the website https://josaa.nic.in/. They could login by entering the application number, password and security pin.

Those who have applied for the Joint Entrance Examination-Main or JEE-Main could enter its application number. Meanwhile, the candidates who have registered for JEE–Advanced should enter that application number.

The applicants should not forget to logout after browsing on the website. The closing ranks, based on the categories, institutes and programmes, of those who have been allotted seats would be published soon on the website.

The admissions are for BTech, BE, BArch, B Planning, 5-year MTech/MSc and 4-year BS programmes at 114 premier institutes, including 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, 31 National Institutes of Technology, 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology in

Shibpur and 33 other centrally funded institutes.

Points to note
The candidates should be careful while completing the admission processes including online reporting. As a first step, the candidates should login and check whether they have allotment. It must be noted that this is a temporary allotment and the candidate would lose his/her chance if the processes aren’t completed within the stipulated time. The schedule is available on pages 79 and 80 under the heading ‘Business Rules’ on the website.

The candidates must download the ‘Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip’ which contains the allotment details and also information about the further steps to be taken in order secure permanent admission.

Freeze, Float and Slide
After accepting the seat, the candidates must choose one of Freeze, Float and Slide options which leads him/her to the next round.

1) Freeze: Choose this option if the candidate is satisfied with the allotted seat and doesn’t wish for a change. It must be noted that no change can be made, in the forthcoming rounds, after choosing this option.
2) Float: Use this option if the candidate is willing to accept the seat that has been presently allotted but is interested in accepting higher options in better institutes in the upcoming rounds. Change in seat or institute would be accepted.
3) Slide: The candidate is interested in changing the allotted seat. However, he/she is willing to change only if he/she gets a higher option in the same institute.

Float or Slide options wouldn’t be available if they get their first choice in the upcoming rounds. There will be a total of six rounds of allotment. In the last round, only the Freeze option is available. The candidates could switch from Float to Slide /Freeze or from Slide to Freeze until the fifth round.

Documents to upload
Among the documents that are mentioned in the third paragraph (pages 82 and 83) of the ‘Business Rules’, the candidates should upload the ones that are applicable to them. The documents required for admission to NIT-plus institutes and NIT have been separately mentioned.

Fees
The seat acceptance fee of Rs 40,000 should be paid online. It is Rs 20,000 for Scheduled Caste/Tribe categories and persons with disabilities.

This is a one-time fee. The documents of the candidates would be verified only if this fees is paid.

Rs 4,000 from this fee would be allocated as JoSAA processing fee and the remaining amount would be reduced from the fees that needed to paid at the time of admission.

If the admission authorities have asked any questions, the candidates need to answer them.

Verification of documents
If the documents and the eligibility are satisfactory, the candidate could download the ‘Provisional Seat Allotment Letter’ from the website. They should then reach the institute, get the documents verified and pay the institute fees in order to secure the admission.

In case, the admission authorities have posed any questions, the candidates could submit the answers until July 5. If the uploaded documents aren’t satisfactory, then they should be redone as demanded.

The candidates may be able to make changes in the temporary allotment, that they have accepted, in the coming rounds. In case, he/she gets transferred from IIT-plus institute to IIT, then he/she must convince that the documents are satisfactory as per the IIT guidelines.

If the transfer is from IIT to IIT-plus, then the candidates must get the documents verified as per the respective guidelines. Those who are making such changes are required to do online reporting twice.

The candidates need to report at the IIT-plus institutes, in person, only after the JoSAA rounds and the special rounds of the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSB) are complete.

However, those who get temporary allotment should pay the ‘Partial Allotment Fee’ of Rs 36,000 within 5 pm on July 31 after the JoSAA round. This amount should be paid online via the JoSAA website. This fee is Rs 16,000 for Scheduled Caste/Tribe categories and persons with disabilities.

The seats that fall vacant even after the last round of JoSAA allotment would be filled by the CSAB (https://csab.nic.in) after conducting counseling.
