Teen siblings drown as bamboo raft overturns

Panamaram (Wayanad): Two teen siblings drowned here while playing in the pond situated on their house plot. The incident took place around 2 pm on Thursday while the boys were playing with the bamboo raft in the pond soon after their lunch.

The villages of Karakkamala-Chamundi and Vellari Vayal are yet to come to terms with the death of Jesvin, 15, and Josevin, 12, elder sons of Shinoj and Sheeja.

As schools were closed owing to the hartal called over the Sabarimala issue, the boys went out to play on the bamboo raft along with their younger brother Christy. As little Christy stood on the banks of the pond, the duo got onto the raft, and moved it forward with the help of a pole. Suddenly, the raft turned turtle and the boys fell into the nearly 8-foot deep muddy pond.

The family members and neighbours rushed to the spot on hearing the scream of Christy. Though the locals took the boys out of the water and rushed them to the district hospital, they died on the way.

Jesvin was a Class 10 student of Dwaraka Sacred Heart High School and Josewin a Class 6 student of Dwaraka AUP School. Their father Shinoj is a temporary staff with the Mananthavady branch of SBI Bank.
