Kochi: Malayalam superstar Mammootty has joined the Tamil film fraternity in supporting the protest to lift ban on jallikattu, a bull-baiting sport.
In a video posted on YouTube, Mammootty said the strike staged by the people of Tamil Nadu was a model for the whole country.
Interestingly, he speaks in Tamil in the video.
"Lakhs of people of Tamil Nadu are on a strike without the backing of any political party and leader. They are not divided by gender and religion. Their strike is a model for India. Wishes, friends," Mammootty says.
Several Tamil stars, including Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijay and Ajith, had earlier come out in support of the protesters. Mammootty, who has acted in several Tamil movies including Mani Ratnam's iconic 'Thalapathi', enjoys a huge fan base in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the days-long protest has nearly reached its conclusion with the central government passing an ordinance facilitating the conduct of jallikattu. The sport is likely to be conducted in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
