But P.G.Harikrishnan achieved that feat in Kathakali competition, Higher Secondary school category, at the state school youth festival being held here.
One does not have to ponder much over what makes him the undisputed Kathakali champ at Kalolsavam – he comes from a dancers' family. Harikrishnan is trained by his father Kalanilayam Gopinathan who has years of professional experience as a Kathakali artiste. His mother is Kalamandalam Prasheeja, a dance teacher again.
Harikrishnan has been learning Kathakali ever since he was nine, under the tutelage of his father, Prasheeja says. Quiz Gopinathan about his son and he says, "He grew up watching me as a Kathakali artiste and his mother as an expert dancer. It is natural that he wanted to learn the dance form too."
The youngster has won scholarships to learn Kathakali and he wants to continue as a Kathakali artiste. He also accompanies his father for professional performances.
Photo: Nelson K PaulThe family's passion for Kathakali does not end with Harikrishnan. His younger brother, Yadukrishnan, who is in 2nd standard, has started following his brother and father and is taking baby steps in Kathakali.
Harikrishnan, a Plus Two student in National HSS, Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur, will also be taking part in the Kathakali group competition along with his schoolmates.
