(Left) Kiran Raphael with (right) French President Francois HollandeKochi: The achievements of a young Malayali scientist have given India a sense of pride at the French Tech Ticket, a project by the French government to help non-French entrepreneurs from all over the world to set-up their startup in Paris.
Dr. Kiran Raphael, 31, a native of Palluruthy, ensured that everyone would take note of his diamond clean tech project recently at the French Tech Ticket entrepreneurship challenge, which was announced by French President Francois Hollande in 2014.
According to Kiran, his pet project, which involved cleaning water using diamond micro electrodes, drew praise from the French president as well as other participants. According a warm approval to Kiran’s project, Hollande said that the diamond clean tech initiative had immense potential to bring about revolutionary changes in the health and industrial sectors.
The French government will provide funds, training opportunities, and expert guidance to the 20 select entrepreneurs from across the globe. Kiran was one of the three Indians selected from around 1,500 entries in the technology challenge.
Kiran also got the opportunity to speak on behalf of the 20 'technopreneurs' at the inauguration of the the project, held at Elysee Palace, the official residence of the president of France, in Paris on March 2.
Son of Dr. K. G. Thomas Maliyekkal of Madonna Clinic, Palluruthy, and Dr. Thankam Thomas, Kiran is an alumnus of Toc H Public School and St. Aloysius School, Palluruthy.
After completing his B.Tech in Biomedical Electronics, Kiran, who bagged the European Union’s scholarship for international students, did an integrated master's degree programme in nanotechnology from four different universities in Italy, France and Switzerland.
Later, he completed his Ph.D. from the University of Paris with a scholarship as well.
Kiran has been living in Germany for the last three years as part of a project involving implantation of nanoelectrodes in the eyes and ears of human beings.
