Massive fire in Karunagapally, 2 shops destroyed

Kollam: A massive fire which occurred in Karunagapally in Kerala's Kollam district has been brought under control. Two shops including a supermarket were destroyed completely in the fire that raged in the early hours of Tuesday. Six units of the fire and rescue team doused the fire after three hours of effort.

The fancy centre 'Super Shopee' which operated in the town's centre near the national highway reportedly caught fire first. The police night patrolling team notified the fireforce about the incident after noticing billowing smoke in the area during their rounds. The fire had already spread to the nearby supermarket at the time.

Units from Kollam, Karunagapally, Sasthamkotta, Chavara and Kayamkulam towns rushed to the spot soon after. Meanwhile, patients from a nearby private hospital were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire which likely started around 2 am has damaged goods worth about Rs 5 crore.

Though the reason for the fire is yet to be determined, it is expected to be caused by a short circuit.
