Pahalgam terror attack: PM Modi chairs crucial security meeting in New Delhi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday evening to discuss the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and formulate India’s response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The meeting which commenced around 6 pm at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the official residence of the Indian Prime Minister concluded around 8.30 pm.
Besides the prime minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were present at the meeting, along with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and senior bureaucrats.
Shah briefed the prime minister on the attack and discussed the measures to be taken in its aftermath.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who is also part of the CCS, could not attend the meeting as she is on her way back from the United States after cutting short her official visit in the wake of the terror attack.
Among those also present at the meeting were Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misry, besides the prime minister's two principal secretaries P K Mishra and Shaktikanta Das.
The Prime Minister, who was on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, cut short his trip and departed for New Delhi on Tuesday night following the terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives in Pahalgam.
Modi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman issued a joint statement on Wednesday stressing that terrorism and violent extremism remain among the gravest threats to humanity and there cannot be any justification for any act of terror for any reason whatsoever.
