Thiruvananthapuram/Idukki/Kochi: The eggs you bought from your nearest supermarket did not quite taste like it? Possibilities are high that they are artificial Chinese eggs made of plastic.

Residents in Idukki recently blocked a vehicle coming from Tamil Nadu and found out that it was carrying artificial Chinese eggs, a Manorama News report said.

In Kochi, locals confiscated eggs from a supermarket at Ponnurunni near Vytilla, claiming that the store was selling artificial eggs.

To prove their point, the consumers cracked eggs in the store and lit the shell and the egg white and it burnt like plastic.

They also said that these eggs don't taste like normal eggs.

Health department officials will now look into the issue, the report added.

With 'artificial' Chinese eggs reportedly making their way into certain parts of the state, health minister K.K. Shylaja Wednesday said a probe would be launched to find out the truth.

Speaking to the media, Shylaja said she has not received any complaints on this score, but she will examine the media reports and find out whether such a product has made its way into the state.

"I will now ask the food safety commissioner to seriously look into these media reports that such a product is available. It would be nice if someone comes up and provides a sample of it so the tests can be conducted quickly," said Shylaja.

Reports have recently surfaced that these 'artificial' eggs were coming into the state from Tamil Nadu.

According to reports, Idukki district bordering Tamil Nadu is where this product is available.

Idukki district medical officer Rekha also told the media that in the wake of reports on the eggs, she too will probe the matter.

'Artificial eggs', reports say, unlike normal eggs are brown in color and if kept in the open after cracking them, flies and other insects are not attracted to them.

The eggs do not spoil or rot even after cooking or leaving them out in the open, according to reports. These are unverified claims.
