Krishnagiri: At least 13 people, including 5 Keralites, were injured when the Kanyakumari-Bangalore Island Express derailed here in Tamil Nadu during the wee hours of Friday.
Eleven sleeper coaches of the Island Express derailed near Tiruppattur on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border at 4.15 am. The Southern Railway in a statement said the coaches derailed between Somanayakkanpatti and Patchur of the Bangalore Railway Division.
There were conflicting reports about the number of passengers injured in the accident, with some placing the number at 40, news agency IANS reported.
People look at a derailed compartment of Island Express.The injured Keralites have been identified as Jessy Jacob, Jacob Kuruvilla, Rani, Binoy and Surendran Pillai. While the first four boarded the train from Kottayam, Pillai took the train from Sasthamkotta. None of the injuries are serious in nature, sources said.

According to sources, the derailment occurred due to suspected rail fracture but the railway spokesperson said that the cause behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.
Most of the injured passengers were travelling in S6, S7 of the train. However, they managed to escape through the emergency window soon after the mishap.
Railway PRO Anil Saxena said that the other passengers will be taken to Bengaluru via road. Buses were arranged to transport passengers to Bengaluru and senior officials have reached the accident spot.
Owing to the accident the Southern Railway has cancelled 11 trains between Chennai-Bengaluru, Jolarpettai-Bengaluru and Arakonam-Bengaluru.
