Kochi: Indore-based Megha Bhargav (27), who has been accused of cheating people through fake marriages, and her accomplices were brought here on Tuesday after they were arrested.
The Kadavanthara Police arrested Megha along with her sister Prachi Bhargav (29) and Devesh Sharma (32), husband of another sister of the duo. They were arrested with the help of Noida Police.
The police made the arrest on a complaint by one Lenin Jithendar, who is based in Gujarat and is living in Vyttila, that he was cheated by Megha of Rs 15 lakhs and 25 sovereigns of gold following their marriage. Megha, however, confessed about one more wedding, bringing the total tally of her marriages to five.
The police said that Megha used to stay with her husband for some time after the marriage and then go underground after stealing gold and money. She used to shift residences with her family from one state to another so that she would remain untraceable. She used to marry people with physical disabilities.
Prachi and Devesh were arrested for helping Megha in the fraudulent acts. Mahendra Gundela, who arranged the marriage of Megha with Lenin, is out on bail. Megha had married Lenin as per religious rites at a temple in Kaloor. She had received Rs15 lakhs and gold before marriage and stayed with her husband for 17 days at Kochi. She then went to Indore with Prachi and never came back. When Lenin went in search of her, she moved to another state.
Megha had married Rajesh Goleja in Chattisgarh in 2012 and fled with Rs 90 lakh. In 2014, she married Hemant Kumar in Gujarat and got away with Rs 13 lakh. In 2015, she married Sandesh Chopra in Rajasthan and cheated him of Rs15 lakh. Arun Kumar of Surat lost Rs 10 lakh for marrying her. Even after a court ordered them to appear before Kadavanthara Police, they went into a hiding.
A police team went to Noida and arrested them. Charges related to marriage fraud, financial fraud and other crimes have been registered against them. They have been remanded to custody.
