Gang-rapes in Bihar: minor girl critical, police call second case an attempt

Motihari/Patna: Once again putting the spotlight on women's safety in India, two instances of heinous sexual abuse were reported from Bihar.

In the first case that happened on June 15, two men allegedly outraged the modesty of a 12-year-old girl in Bedivan Madhuvan village in Motihari and in the second case, reported on Thursday, a 21-year-old woman was gang-raped and her private organs were mutilated by the accused on Wednesday in East Champaran district.

The health condition of a 12-year-old girl deteriorated on Thursday, which triggered protest by locals who blocked the national highway demanding speedy trial.

On June 15, the 12-year-old girl had gone to collect mangoes in an orchard where the two accused gang-raped her, according to a complaint lodged by her family.

Meanwhile, the victim's father said he was being coerced by two of the villagers to withdraw the case and being threatened his son would be kidnapped otherwise.

Locals, on Thursday, blocked Motihari-Muzaffarpur National Highway 28 near Pipra in East Champaran district demanding speedy trial of the two arrested in connection with the gang-rape of the girl.

The victim is now being treated in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and her condition was critical as she received serious internal injuries, her family said on Thursday.

Victim's father told PTI his daughter was operated upon in PMCH last evening but she has not gained consciousness yet.

Chakia deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Mundrika Prasad said two persons - Pramod Sahni and Kamlesh Sahni - were arrested the same day and sent to jail on the basis of FIR lodged by victim's father.

Commenting on the demand by locals, he said speedy trial will be conducted in the case.

Chakia sub-divisional officer Chitragupta said district administration will look after the treatment of the girl.

She was initially admitted to Motihari Sadar Hospital in a critical condition but later referred to PMCH, Patna.

Her father claimed his daughter's treatment is being carried out with the help of contributions collected from the people of his village.

Bihar Police refute report of gang-rape of woman

The Bihar police, however, on Thursday refuted reports that the 21-year-old woman was gang-raped and the accused mutilated her private parts, maintaining that only an attempt was made to rape her.

Additional director general (Police Headquarters) Sunil Kumar said it was actually a case of attempt to rape. "Our investigation has revealed that the woman was not gang-raped as was reported, rather an attempt was made to rape her," he said.

He said the doctors who examined the woman confirmed that she was not raped.

Kumar said the accused had not been arrested so far but raids were continuing.
