The IMD has issued an Orange alert indicating isolated heavy rainfall for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala.
Three shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam were opened by 30 cm earlier in the day to release 534 cubic feet of water. This was later doubled to well over 1,000 cubic feet to release excess water.
The average hourly inflow at Mullaperiyar till 7 pm on Thursday was 6592 cusecs.
The water level in 10 of KSEB's bigger dams, including the largest Idukki dam, has not crossed even the 'blue level', the first stage when a warning is issued.
Tamil Nadu is now attempting to raise the water level in the dam to the permitted capacity of 142 ft as it has reached 135.9 ft already.
The airstrip is being constructed to provide training for the cadets of the NCC Air Wing.
The decision to raise the shutters was made in view of the heavy rain the region has experienced these past few days.
The Kerala Government's apprehension is that with the formation of the Authority, the existing monitoring committee may be disbanded.
If safety checks prove Kerala’s contention regarding the weakening of the dam, the State can proceed smoothly with measures to build a new structure.
The Supervisory Committee was constituted by the Supreme Court in 2014 to monitor the safety arrangements of the 126-year-old dam.
