The minister said that the airports have gone beyond their call of duty by allowing technical landing to 120+ aircraft bound for Sri Lanka.
The flights to Chennai will be increased to 17 from the current 10.
The last three days saw nine aircraft flying either in the Colombo-Europe or Colombo-Middle East sectors opting for Cochin airport’s technical landing capability.
Nair, who joined CIAL from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in 2000, was made Airport Director in 2004. His 18-year tenure as director marks a record in the country.
Many of these operations are exposed only when Customs officials receive tip-offs in this regard.
As per the data released by the airport, CIAL handled 43,06,661 passengers in 2021 against 33,37,830 of 2020; an increase of almost a million.
With this schedule becoming effective, CIAL will facilitate 694 weekly domestic operations which is at par with pre-pandemic period.
Under ‘Meet-and-greet’, elderly travellers, carrying women and young children would be given assistance for boarding as well as disembarking.
CIAL Managing Director S Suhas IAS has said that the updated schedule will stimulate the aviation as well as tourism sectors in the time of the distress.
