Anvar, who had earlier ruled out contesting, made a dramatic U-turn on Sunday, announcing his candidacy.
Inaugurating the LDF convention in Nilambur, Vijayan said that M Swaraj has a strong public support in the constituency and has a clean image, allowing him to seek votes with confidence.
Rahul said that he asked Anvar to make decisions rationally and not to deviate from his target.
The move comes after Anvar, the former Nilambur MLA, said on Saturday that he would not contest the election
Anvar criticised some leaders within the UDF itself who, he claims, opposed his entry into the alliance.
Anvar expressed optimism that the UDF meeting scheduled for Friday, which will discuss the potential inclusion of TMC in the alliance, may reach a resolution.
I was prepared to take a strong stance against 'Pinarayaism', but that requires unity, Anvar said.
UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath said such controversies are common during elections.
Earlier in the day, Anvar had lashed out at Opposition leader V D Satheesan after being denied the UDF ticket for the Nilambur assembly bypoll.
