Subcommittee recommends modification to evaluation methods in MG University

MG University plans foolproof mechanism on the lines of visa centres to root out graft

Kottayam: The Mahatma Gandhi University’s syndicate subcommittee, in its investigation, found out that the MBA section had been at fault in the infamous bribery case in which a woman employee of the university was arrested while accepting bribe. The committee recommended action against CJ Elsy, an assistant at the MBA department in the University and a section officer, who is her superior. Elsy is currently under suspension.

The committee also recommended changes in the evaluation methods in order to avoid such instances in the future. The teachers who evaluate the answer sheets should upload the marks in the university’s portal, themselves. The marks have to be uploaded using a secret number assigned to each student. The employees in the tabulation department would then upload the marks under the actual register number. Presently, the teachers note the marks on the answer sheets, as per the secret code number, at the valuation camps itself. The employees at the tabulation department then upload them in the portal. The enquiry committee even expressed apprehension whether Elsy had altered the marks of two other MBA students. The authorities said that the matter would be investigated.

‘No one else in the MBA department had any hand in it. Elsy was the only one who took bribe from the student who had filed the complaint. She had informed, while gathering evidence, that she didn’t give money to anyone else in the department. The section officers are in charge of various valuation camps. The section officer used to come to the MBA department only twice a week and failed to notice the malpractices that were happening in his office,’ the enquiry committee had assessed.

Special camps would be held to immediately distribute more than 7000 degree certificates that have piled up. Besides, the committee has recommended to hold camps to avoid delay in the publication of results. The syndicate sub committee’s report was handed over to Vice Chancellor Dr. Sabu Thomas on Wednesday. Further action would be taken only after discussing the report in the next syndicate meeting.
