Thrissur: The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has relaxed a major condition for starting new nursing colleges in the state. Under KUHS’s latest decision, hospitals with at least 200 beds will be able to set up nursing colleges.

As per the earlier rules, nursing colleges could be opened only by hospitals having a minimum of 300 beds.

The decision to relax the condition was taken by an Academic Council of the university presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal. The concession is being granted considering the rising demand for nurses around the world.

KUHS officials said that several new nursing colleges will come up in the state following this move.

Security measures

The meeting also directed colleges under the university to take measures such as appointing more security staff and installing surveillance cameras to ensure the safety of personnel in the health sector. Affiliation would be denied to colleges failing to follow this directive, said the university authorities.
