As a rule, the kitchen would usually be smaller in size than other rooms, except maybe in those old illams that used to have large spacious kitchens. But then too, when it comes to the number of shelves, homemakers were very particular. Neat, orderly, and beautiful kitchen is an asset. Having said that one should keep an eye on the budget while designing kitchens.

When building a kitchen, useable space should be given priority. The person who cooks in the kitchen, his profession, and the cooking time required should be foreseen while planning the facilities in the kitchen. If it is a show kitchen, it can be kept open, and the countertop should be kept small. The number of cupboards can also be controlled in the show kitchen. And that should be done at the convenience of the person working in the kitchen.

Kitchen cabinets are essential. But when you have cost-cutting in mind, avoid cabinets made of wood. You can use compressed wood instead. This will greatly reduce the construction cost. Avoid polishing the compressed wood to a matte finish while using it for shelves. That would be difficult to clean. A gloss finish would be beneficial in the long run.

Apart from compressed wood, materials such as plywood, aluminium, PVC, plastic, and fibre can also be used for the construction of the cabin. If these are used, the cost will further climb down. Shelves are usually built on top of the kitchen. Build shelves only where we use them the most. This can avoid unnecessary expenses.
